DIY Macrame Memory Board

Learn how to make this DIY macramé wall hanging to display all of your sandy inspirations.

Inspiration can be found anywhere and we just happened to end up with a pocketful post-Barbados. Then the question that always comes next, what to do with all your newfound treasures?

Our current fascination of all things macramé has been in full effect, with its understated appearance reminiscent of soft sandy beaches, we conjured up a way to combine the two. And with one look at our crochet pieces for summer, we were beaming with intricate ideas for this project (have a look, you’ll see what we mean!).

What you’ll need:

  • Wooden dowel
  • Cotton clothesline
  • Removable hooks
  • Scissors
  • A little inspiration to hang

Hang your wooden dowel on the wall using the removable hooks on both ends at the height you’d like your macramé memory board. Tip: you might want to use a level to help when hanging the dowel.

Cut your clothesline into 14 equal lengths, approximately 17ft each. All of these pieces will be folded in half, and looped to the dowel.

As a rule of thumb, always cut approximately double the length of your final design (if not more).

Secure your ropes with a simple loop around the dowel and pass the ends back through the hole. Once all 14 are looped to the dowel, pair up the strands and spread apart until you have 7 segments.

Begin your first square knot using 4 strands. Pass the far left strand over the middle two. Loop the far right over the far left strand you just passed across, then back under the middle two and through the new loop on the far left. Refer the picture and repeat this step but from the opposite direction to complete the square.

Repeat this same knot technique along the first row and then begin the next row using 2 strands from each of the above knots.

Continue until your macramé looks something like this! Trust us, it actually is pretty quick once you get going!
